Lobster Rodeo

Scuba Diving Event July 27: Marathon, FL, USA

free lobster rodeo to prepare divers for miniseason marathon, florida keys - a multiagency safe-diving initiative designed to enhance sport diving and boating safety is to be highlighted at the second annual lobster rodeo &amp dive safety expo set for sunday, july 27. the free event is to be staged on knights key, mile marker 47 at the seven mile bridge , three days prior to the july 30 opening of florida s two-day lobster miniseason - a period that traditionally attracts large numbers of divers to the keys. the challenge, marine-related officials say, is that in divers enthusiasm to catch the tasty florida spiny lobster, many either forget or neglect to exercise proper and simple scuba diving safety measures. failure to do so can result in diving accidents, and sometimes those mishaps can be catastrophic. accidents occur in shallow water with divers forgetting very basic skills, said robert guhl, chairman of the safe-diving initiative. most are preventable if divers review or "refresh" skills and check their equipment functions properly. the lobster rodeo combines scuba skills stations with minisafety briefings. skills stations vary from basic mask clearing to controlled emergency swimming ascents and weight ping. there also are demonstrations and contests designed to hone participants lobster-catching skills, including tickling techniques and bagging simulated lobsters. to participate in the events scuba activities, attendees must bring their scuba certification card and their own gear. minibriefings are to include safe-boating skills, dive flag use, proper lobster gauging, gear demos, florida keys national marine sanctuary rules and how to avoid the bends. participating area dive shops are to be on hand to showcase value-added dive packages in addition to information promoting safe diving. the marathon rotary club plans to sell beverages. the dive safety program is a result of a combined effort of the u.s. coast guard, florida fish and wildlife conservation commission, monroe county sheriffs office and key west police department marine units, florida keys national marine sanctuary, florida keys community college , keys association of dive operators, lower keys medical center and fishermens hospital. for lobster rodeo details, or to download cards containing dive safety and emergency tips created by the florida keys safe diving initiative, visit the organizations web site at www.fla-keysdive.com . for more information about diving, snorkeling and accommodations in the florida keys , visit www.fla-keys.com.

Dive Travel Deal: Solmar V Guadalupe, Guadalupe, Mexico

July 30 - August 3 2008 Solmar V Guadalupe, Guadalupe, Mexico

Departing from Ensenada, Mexico, this is our newest dive adventure in the Baja California area. In 2005, we teamed up with Great White Adventures in order to provide our guests the opportunity to view the apex predator of the sea – the great white shark.

Located in the Pacific Ocean approximately 180 miles west of Ensenada, Mexico, Guadalupe Island is rapidly becoming the world’s best location for diving with great white sharks. The visibility is often more than 100’ and the water temperature averages between 65F-70F. This is cage diving at its most exciting and, because you will be using surface supplied air (hookah) instead of scuba tanks, you do not need to be a certified scuba diver in order to participate in these trips. These 5 day trips are shorter than our other diving excursions so they are perfect for a great mini-vacation.

Solmar V, in conjunction with Great White Adventures, also offers submersible cage diving on our Guadalupe Island expeditions.

The submersible cage allows us to descend a little further into the world of the great white shark. Although the submersible cage is only 20 below the surface of the water, it provides a completely different perspective to your great white shark diving experience. These spectacular dives are available to certified scuba divers only. A Great White Adventures safety diver escorts one diver at a time on these 20 minute dives. We rotate all certified divers who wish to experience the submersible cage as many times as conditions will allow. The view offered by the submersible cage is a photographers dream come true. You are actually surrounded on all sides by the apex predator of the sea. We have had an exceptional response from our guests about how phenomenal this experience is. Both professional and amateur photographers rave about the different angles available to capture the mighty great white sharks of Guadalupe Island.
$2900

Dive Travel Deal: Solmar V Sea of Cortez, Sea of Cortez, Mexico

Oct 12 - Oct 19 2008 Solmar V Sea of Cortez, Sea of Cortez, Mexico

The Sea of Cortez is also home to many endemic species, such as the Cortez angelfish and Cortez damselfish, found nowhere else in the world. We also encounter whale sharks, hammerheads, orcas, whales and dolphins. We have been diving the amazing Sea of Cortez since 1984, when we opened our scuba store, Amigos del Mar in Cabo San Lucas.

The Sea of Cortez is located between the Baja Peninsula and the mainland of Mexico. It is one of the youngest and most fertile seas on earth, containing over 850 species of reef fish. The beautiful, tranquil sea has much to offer – large schools of tropicals, jacks, tuna, dorado, wahoo, marlin, stingrays, turtles, playful resident California sea lions, several types of moray eels, lobster, octopus, frogfish, sharks, mantas, and the famous flying mobulas of the Sea of Cortez.

Dive the infamous offshore seamounts like El Bajo and Gordo Banks or dive the largest living coral reef on the western side of North America, Cabo Pulmo.

The water temp is usually between 74F - 84F during our visits into the Sea of Cortez and the visibility ranges from 50 - 100+ ft. The dates of these trips vary each year but usually run in June, July and October, depending on the dates of our boatyard haul-out and the dates of our spectacular Guadalupe Island great white shark trips.

This area is usually calm and the distance between dive destinations is not far. Although there are some advanced dives most of the diving is moderate. This is a great trip for those looking for a live-aboard experience in calm water with both big and small marine animal encounters. There is something special about the Baja peninsula and diving the Sea of Cortez – a living desert wilderness spilling into the spectacular Sea of Cortez.

Dive Travel Deal: Solmar V Socorro Islands, Socorro Islands, Mexico

November 20 - November 28 2008 Solmar V Socorro Islands, Socorro Islands, Mexico

The Revillagigedos Archipelago

The Revillagigedos Archipelago, more commonly called Socorro is located in the eastern Pacific Ocean approximately 250 miles south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico – at the tip of the Baja peninsula. These islands have been compared to the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador or Cocos Island in Costa Rica because of the big animal encounters they provide.

The Revillagigedos Islands consist of 4 islands – San Benedicto Island, Socorro Island, Roca Partida and Clarion. We simply call them Socorro. They are wild, remote and unpredictable and have been called the Mexican Galapagos. This area is famous for up close and personal encounters with the Giant Pacific manta ray, which can grow to 22 feet from wingtip to wingtip. We’ve been interacting with these gentle giants since 1992 and as a result of having worked with several manta researchers over the years, we have extensive ID’s on most of them and special relationships with many of them. We absolutely do not chase or ride the mantas, and we allow our interaction with them to be initiated by the mantas themselves. We believe that their continued willingness to interact with divers is due to the respect we have shown for them over the years. San Benedicto is by far the best location in the world to experience and photograph these gentle giants. The feeling of a wild animal this large deliberately interacting with you is something you will never forget.

There are lots of sharks in the Revillagigedos Islands - hammerhead schools, white tips, silver tips, silkies, duskies, Galapagos and occasionally tigers.

We have encountered up to 7 species of sharks on a single dive! There are several hammerhead cleaning stations that we visit each trip, weather permitting. Whale sharks are a special treat at the islands, they find us in November/December and late April/May.

We also encounter pods of wild bottlenose dolphin on a regular basis and from January through March, these islands are home to a large population of humpback whales, that come here to breed and calve. We have observed several newborn humpbacks in the years we’ve been fortunate enough to visit these remote and pristine islands. In the last few years the frequency of underwater encounters with humpbacks has increased dramatically. The scientists who visit the Revillagigedos Islands every year to study the migrating whale population tell us that after twelve years of encountering the SOLMAR V, the humpbacks now recognize our vessel and so the opportunity for underwater encounters improves. Add to the mix extremely large tuna (the world record yellowfin is from these waters), wahoo, thick schools of jacks and many other big critters along with endemic tropicals found nowhere else in the world, and you have the BEST BIG ANIMAL DIVING ON EARTH!!

Dive Travel Deal: Nekton Diving Cruises, St. Croix, USVI, USA

Oct 18 - January 17 2009 Nekton Diving Cruises, St. Croix, USVI, USA

Some of the best diving in the USVI can be found in St. Croix. The North Shore is home to "The Wall" which runs parallel along the island for about 7 miles. The North Shore has a very diverse underwater environment including classic spur and groove reefs, beautiful coral gardens, and spectacular walls that plummet to depths of 3,200 feet.

When talking about St. Croix diving one would be horribly remiss to not mention diving the west side including the incredible Frederiksted Pier. The pier is covered with frog fish, bat fish, flying Gunards, eels, sea horses, octopus, eagle rays and all manner of sponges, hard corals and tube worms. And there are many more critters you’ll see on your night dive at the pier. The west side wrecks of Butler Bay are also fantastic and include the Rosa Marie Ferry, the Coakley Bay Tug, Moon Base Alpha Habitat and the Suffolk Main. Most can be penetrated without a wreck certification and lie in mid-level depths.

Dive cruises depart from Farjardo on the eastern side of Puerto Rico very close to the San Juan airport (SJU). This makes the air transportation inexpensive and convenient. Join us on this exciting new cruise and see what the Caribbean has to offer, all without leaving American waters. Dive cruises start October 18, 2008, so book now to insure your spot on this spectacular new destination.

Scuba Diving Event May 7: , CA, USA

as you may or may not know, the catalina chamber is dedicated strictly to the treatment of diving accidents on a 24/7/365 basis. although we hope you’ll never need it, having the chamber available gives divers a vital safety net in the event something should go wrong with your dive. although there is a grant from la county, and the chamber gets income from some outside activities, chamber day provides a significant portion (close to 50%) of the chamber’s annual budget. the main event is chamber day , a full day of diving (two dives) at catalina plus a walking tour of the chamber at the isthmus. cost for this is $90 (plus $30 for food &amp airfills) which gets you the diving, the tour, a t-shirt, and five raffle tickets. for those who can’t take a day off but would still like to participate we have the flying dutchman , a mythical boat but a big part of chamber day as it’s the perfect place for those who can’t do the event. those who choose to “dive” the dutchman get a special limited-edition t-shirt (available only to those who sign up for the dutchman) as well as raffle tickets. there’s also the chamber challenge , where the diving community is “challenged” to raise extra funds for our chamber, through specific donations (usually $100, but also $500 and $1000), which then hopefully challenges your friends to match your generosity. r affle tickets can be purchased for the daytime raffle (you need not be present to win) whether you’re going on a boat or just want a chance at winning some fabulous prizes.

Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber Educational Programs (USC) - Catalina Island

Scuba Diving Event February 24 - February 29: Avalon, Catalina Island, CA, USA

The USC (University of Southern Californi) Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber, located on the campus of the Wrigley Marine Science Center at Big Fisherman´s Cove at the West End of Catalina Island, is an emergency medical facility for the treatment of scuba diving accidents. Without proper treatment, major problems from diving accidents, most commonly Decompression Sickness (the ´´Bends´´) and Air Embolism, can lead to permanent disabling injuries and in some instances be fatal. In the Southern California area around Catalina Island, the combination of effective on-site management of a diving accident along with the rapid response by Los Angeles County Baywatch Lifeguards, or the U.S. Coast Guard, and swift, effective treatment at the Chamber can save a diver´s life. A major mission of the USC Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber is to provide Educational Opportunities for the diving communities. Contact the Hyperbaric Chamber for a list of programs and dates offered.

Dive Travel Deal: Isla Guadalupe-Great White Sharks, San Diego, CA, USA

August 16 - November 11 2008 Isla Guadalupe-Great White Sharks, San Diego, CA, USA

san diego, ca, november 11, 2007 (pr.com) adventure seekers looking to encounter great white sharks on a unique cage diving vacation with sharkdiver.com in 2008 will get more than they bargained for with a brand new ipod nano before christmas.

“in celebration of our sixth year of successful and stunning great white shark encounters at isla guadalupe, we decided to send ipods to all new divers for 2008,” said ceo patric douglas. “our divers always want video of their white shark encounters. now with these new third generation ipods, they can download videos from our website and share them with everyone.”

in a world of free ipod giveaways, shark diver stands out. the company will ship an ipod nano to divers on the day they book a 2008 white shark expedition so they will have it within the week.

there’s no waiting, no surprises it is the perfect giveaway for media savvy adventure divers. shark diver’s ipod nanos come in silver and hold two gigabytes worth of video, images and music.

“the dive world has really embraced digital media,” says douglas. “today most of our divers shoot in digital, so having a player that holds images and video and allows them to access the exciting moments they spend with us, whenever they like, makes their adventure spring to life all over again.”

located 210 miles off the coast of mexico, isla guadalupe has become the worldwide recognized dive destination for an unprecedented number of great white sharks (carcharodon carcharias) and provides exceptional opportunities for divers seeking encounters with these misunderstood denizens of the deep.

about shark diver
recently featured on the 20th anniversary of discovery channel’s shark week, sharkdiver.com has been thrilling divers from around the world for the past six years with safe and exciting shark encounters. shark diver has expanded to offer cage diving trips with tiger sharks in the bahamas, giant squid encounters, as well as deep-dive submarine trips to see giant deepwater sharks in roatan.

ceo patric douglas is a natural born eco-adventurer who started his career in the u.s.virgin islands in hotel tourism, spent several years as a tour guide in vietnam, bali, hong kong, australia/new zealand and latin america and served as an extreme adventure reporter for cbs in san francisco, ca. he also founded the outdoor adventure club "absolute adventures" in 1998 which continues to thrive in san francisco to this day.

for the past several years, douglas has dedicated his time and energy to providing educational and interactive experiences for his clients through shark diving. in addition, shark diver, along with its partners, recently launched the non-profit isla guadalupe conservation fund and is partially funding efforts to preserve the habitat and safe study the great white shark species at the island.

Trashfest - TEXAS GULF COAST COUNCILOF DIVE CLUBS

Scuba Diving Event Oct 6: New Braunfels, TX, USA

About TrashFest... Divers gather once a year in scenic New Braunfels to clean the crystal clear Comal River after a season of tubers have "lost" literally tons of trash. This is one of the oldest divers environmental clean up in the country. Join us for a day of fun diving, competition, and a wrap-up BBQ and door prize giveaway. TrashFest is a major event bringing together scuba divers, businesses, governmental agencies, schools, civic and youth groups, and local citizens to improve the quality of the Comal River in New Braunfels, TX. The Comal River became famous when Ripleys Believe It or Not featured it as the shortest river in the world. The 2.5-mile Comal is one of the largest springs in Texas with 8 million gallons of water flowing through every hour. The water is pure, clear and cold, about 23-29 Celsius (72 degrees F.), and attracts thousands of tubers and tourists each year. TrashFest draws participants from all over Texas and beyond. The purpose of Trashfest is to: Raise public awareness of the aquatic environment in Texas Promote recycling programs and community involvement Serve as a model for other river and aquatic cleanup programs around the country Involve young children and educate them about the importance of protecting our environment TrashFest is believed to be the longest running underwater cleanup in the country, with the first clean up in 1974. Since 1980*, more than 8500 volunteers have removed over: 197,000 pounds of trash 250,000 cans and bottles 351,000 pop-tops and bottle caps 8,500 sunglasses and shoes *no records available prior to 1980 This year, TrashFest will be held on October 7, 2006. Registration will be held at the Comal County Fairgrounds, and the trash weigh in and collection will be at Prince Solms Park, New Braunfels, TX. Trashfest is operated by the Texas Gulf Coast Council of Diving Clubs (TGCC).
