Be a part of the largest volunteer day on the planet! Coastal Cleanup Day (CCD) began in 1985 and has grown into a huge annual event. Every state with a coastline participates, including the Great Lakes states, and even some inland states clean river and lake shores. The one-day cleanup is international�at last count, over 60 nations participated�and may be the largest volunteer day on the planet. Heal the Bay and the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors are the Los Angeles County coordinators for the state of Californias Coastal Cleanup Day. We bring out over 10,000 volunteers to cleanup sites each year in L.A. County to over 50 sites along Santa Monica Bay and along inland creeks and waterways. Please see the sidebar on the right for information about the next Coastal Cleanup Day in Los Angeles County. Coastal Cleanup Day involves individuals, schools, community and company volunteer groups. Volunteers in Los Angeles County typically collect tens of thousands of pounds of trash and recyclables during a three-hour period. By filling out the trash "data cards" during the cleanup, volunteers are helping to identify and stop polluters in the future. Most people clean at the beach and on foot, but there are also special cleanups for inland creeks, boaters, kayakers, and divers. By far the most common item picked up are cigarette butts. Some of the more unusual items found in recent years were a chandelier, a briefcase full of graham crackers, and a bridal gown. The Maldives Islands lie Southwest of India. Scattered across the equator in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the gem-like islands of the Maldives depict the rare vision of a tropical paradise. Palm fringed islands with sparkling white beaches, turquoise lagoons, clear warm waters and coral reefs teeming with abundant varieties of marine flora and fauna, fascinates visitors as it has for thousands of years. There are three distinctly different types of diving: inside the atolls, outside the atolls and inside the channels or passes, which is where the currents are strongest and youll find the greatest congregation of fish life. Most intriguing are the cleaning stations, found around every corner and under every ledge. Groupers, Snappers, Surgeonfish, Eels, Parrotfish, even Giant Napoleon Wrasse park casually in corners, oblivious to all, (including cameras) while armies of wrasse, shrimp and other assorted cleaners pick at debris in their open gills and cavernous mouths. The big attraction, however, are the schools of fish that patrol the reefs in colorful packs: Humpback and Black and White Snappers, Trevally Jacks, Barracuda, Batfish, Unicornfish, Yellowback Fusiliers and Harlequin Sweetlips almost comical in design. The reefs larger inhabitants, including sharks, rays and occasionally even Whale Sharks, are often seen cruising in the blue.

The Dive-a-Thon is SDOFs largest fundraiser of the year, with the goal to "get divers diving" - while spreading our message of ocean stewardship. Similar to a walk-a-thon, divers seek financial pledges from friends and family to support their diving goal during the month of July. Rocks, Reefs and Rips program (3Rs) is a mini-course designed to familiarize divers with popular beach dive sites and improve their beach diving skills. Spring sessions in the Greater Los Angeles metropolitan area will take place: May 9 at Veteran�s Park (Redondo Beach) and June 13 at Nicolas Canyon (northwest Los Angeles County). A schedule of summer sessions is being set for the San Diego area. Additional workshops are planned at various locations for both areas through summer and early fall. Instructors will demonstrate and supervise proper surf entry and exit procedures, explain unique aspects of the dive site, and discuss dive condition assessment techniques. Participants are then led on a snorkeling tour of the dive site. (Participants are to wear full wetsuit, mask, fins, snorkel, and a weight belt with half of the normal weight they use for diving. Tanks and regulators are not allowed.) All classes begin at 8 a.m., but participants should arrive early for registration. There may be a fee depending on the session (visit the appropriate web site as indicated below). The Los Angeles area workshops are organized and conducted by the L.A. County Underwater Instructors Association in cooperation with the Greater Los Angeles Council of Divers (GLACD). For more information on the L.A. as you may or may not know, the catalina chamber is dedicated strictly to the treatment of diving accidents on a 24/7/365 basis. although we hope you�ll never need it, having the chamber available gives divers a vital safety net in the event something should go wrong with your dive. although there is a grant from la county, and the chamber gets income from some outside activities, chamber day provides a significant portion (close to 50%) of the chamber�s annual budget. the main event is chamber day , a full day of diving (two dives) at catalina plus a walking tour of the chamber at the isthmus. cost for this is $90 (plus $30 for food & airfills) which gets you the diving, the tour, a t-shirt, and five raffle tickets. for those who can�t take a day off but would still like to participate we have the flying dutchman , a mythical boat but a big part of chamber day as it�s the perfect place for those who can�t do the event. those who choose to �dive� the dutchman get a special limited-edition t-shirt (available only to those who sign up for the dutchman) as well as raffle tickets. there�s also the chamber challenge , where the diving community is �challenged� to raise extra funds for our chamber, through specific donations (usually $100, but also $500 and $1000), which then hopefully challenges your friends to match your generosity. r affle tickets can be purchased for the daytime raffle (you need not be present to win) whether you�re going on a boat or just want a chance at winning some fabulous prizes.
