I was able to pick up a pair of normal fins for a pretty good price. Oceanic Vipers... came in my snorkel package and tried them out after purchasing in someone�s pool. They work great. That might throw a wrench in the split fin catagory, but thought I might throw it out there.

The question is: what is the value of a few extra dollars compared to the cost of all your diving trips.

Anything you can do to increase the enjoyment of your dives pays back very quickly. This is true of most of your equipment, but especially your reg and your fins.

Don�t skimp, unless it�s absolutely necessary (which is unlikely if you can afford to dive at all).

I prefer split fins. I had Mares Quattros, now I have Appolos. I like them, but they�re heavy, and with weight restrictions on baggage I wouldn�t buy them again, rather I�d go for Atomics. The new Mares split fins are inexpensive and are probably worth a look.

You�ll find the rubber split fins will out peform and be much more comfortable than the plastic or the plastic/rubber composit fins but yes, are generally a bit heavier. And in terms of performance and comfort, you are comparing luxury to luxury in that any split fin will be much more comfortable and easy to kick with than any paddle fin. As for the weight difference we aren�t talking pounds, but they are noticably heavier.

I can say that I�ve never been so over weight in my luggage that trading my fins was going to make the difference between an overweight charge and not.

According to the Recreational Scuba Training Council, the absolute limit for recreational scuba divers is 130 ft. 100ft is the "recommended" limit for recreational divers.

The current World Record deep dive using open circuit scuba equipment is 1083ft set by Pascal Benabe.

I love my split fins - Mares Raptors (http://www.mares.com/product_detail.php?id=410&region=USA)

They have been the first pair I ever bought and they have exceeded my expectations. I had recently had double knee surgery and using the split fin made it easier to move without excess effort. Especially if you are new to diving, split fins will allow for better maneuverability and control.

I have also not had any problems with weight and I have a size 13 fin...so they are quite large. My issue is finding luggage that will hold them. :-)

Recreational diving limit is 100ft not 130ft on a 20% mix witch is what we now breath 20% o2 79% nitrogen and 1% other! Anything over that would be a Nitrox Mix or a trimix witch uses healium.

Re: Removing BCD Post-Pins
Often you can use 2 pair of pliers and simply pull them apart. They are just made of nylon and although threaded frequently are stripped by the manufacturer when installed. If you can pull them apart you should be able to reuse them by simply pressing them together again.

Removing BCD Post-Pins
Purchased a Sherwood Avid BCD and the Akona accessory Pro Kit. For some reason, I cannot get the D-Ring and side release clip post pins to separate so I can attach the dive knife sheath. Is there a trick to unscrewing these? I tried two screw drivers, two quarters but just turns.
